Dirang, the land of the Monpa tribe

Dirang is recognized for its apple orchards, sheep ranches, and natural hot springs. While traveling, you can visit a number of places on the way, including the Tippi Orchid Centre, the Sessa Orchid Sanctuary, and Dirang Dzong or Dirang Fort.

A fascinating drive to Tawang

Situated at an altitude of 14,000 ft. this route to Sela Pass from Dirang is sparsely populated and the forest cover is alpine. This famous pass is usually covered with snow throughout the year and is accompanied by a small lake, a hot spring, and a memorial named after Jaswant Ghar.

Attaining serenity

It's a path framed by towering snow peaks over you, waterfalls (some frozen) around every corner, and a Nuranang River gushing along the way.

Most famous lakes of Arunachal Pradesh - PTSO Lake

PTSO lake is an ideal spot for a picnic. Land records say the lake was created by a flash flood following the 1950 earthquake in the region.

The Tawang monastery

Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso founded it in 1681 with the blessings of the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso. The township of Tawang boasts misty mountains, rich forests, lush orchards, and Buddhist monasteries.

Tawang war memorial

This multi-hued memorial stands at 40 feet high and is built in stupa style. In dedication to the martyrs of the Sino-Indian war held in 1962, this memorial is nestled among beautiful peaks that overlook the Tawang-Chu valley.

FAQs

Do I need an extra vehicle for visiting Bum La Pass in Tawang?
Yes. As per the laws of the local taxi associations of Tawang, vehicles outside of Tawang are not permitted to visit Bum La Pass and the adjacent areas. So, a local taxi has to be hired for the day.
We usually keep this optional (and don’t include the cost of the additional taxi in our package) as some guests choose to skip the sightseeing of Bum La. We let you decide, after reaching Tawang, and if you choose to go for it then we help in arranging a local taxi in Tawang.
How to reach Tawang from Delhi?
The most active airport and railway station nearest Tawang are located in Guwahati, which is approximately 500 kilometers away from Tawang. Tezpur, a city approximately 300 kilometers away from Tawang, also has an airport and a railway station, although flights/ trains are limited.
So, first of all, you will have to reach either Guwahati or Tezpur from Delhi. Then you will have to cover the remaining distance by road through hilly terrain.
How far is Tawang from Guwahati? How is the road?
Tawang is approximately 500 kilometers away from Guwahati. The route comprises smooth 4-lane highways, as well as single-lane hilly roads. Due to the topographic, it is near difficult to cover the stretch of 500 kilometers within a day. That is why we use transit points like Bomdila, Dirang, Nameri, Tezpur, and Bhalukpong to make your journey from Guwahati to Tawang a relaxed and comfortable one.
How many days does it require for a Tawang tour?
It will take at least 6 days and 5 nights for a Tawang tour (ex-Guwahati).
How many days does it require for a complete Arunachal Pradesh tour?
A minimum of 30 days is needed to cover complete sightseeing of Arunachal Pradesh, you will need at least 30 days.
The Tawang region, with sightseeing of Bum La Pass and Zimithang, can be covered in 9 days. The Ziro and Mechuka region will take additional 8 days. The Anini region, through Mayodia Pass, will take additional 5 or 6 days to cover, if you continue from Pasighat (after covering Mechuka). If you wish to continue to the Dong area through Tezu, it will take 5 days, from Pasighat. To cover the Namdapha and Tengapani area, it will take 4 days, from Dibrugarh.
Note that these routes only include regular sightseeing. If you're keen on experiential activities like birding in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in Bomdila or exploring spiritual Buddhism in Tawang, or interacting with various indigenous tribes, it will take more time.
What kind of apparel and clothing accessories do we need to take for visiting Tawang and Shillong?
For visiting Tawang during winter, you will need warm woolen clothes, jackets, gloves, and non-slippery shoes. For Shillong, especially during summers an umbrella or raincoat is highly recommended.
When does it snow in Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh?
Snow is a natural phenomenon and occurs randomly in winters. There is no specific time for it. The amount and duration of snowfall may vary year on year. The expected, however not guaranteed time is between December and February.
